Following popular screenings in Kensington (see article and photos here) and Glasgow, there will be more showings of "The Business of Being Born" being arranged over the next couple of months - details will be posted here as they become available.

Released in the USA in January 2008, it has great relevance to anyone with an interest in childbirth.

"A must-see movie for anyone even thinking about having a baby!"

"Midwives are preparing for a rush of interest in births outside hospital once this film hits UK screens" - Susie Mesure in The Independent
"The Birth of a Revolution!" - Joanna Moorhead in the Guardian

Latest news:

We are organising a postcard campaign for supporters to contact their local Primary Care Trust. We are asking PCTs to ensure women have access to community caseload midwifery and homebirth, and to commission local independent midwives. Look up the address of your PCT here or here for Scotland. If you want a supply of our specially printed postcards send us an email at contact@saveindependentmidwifery.org, or you may like to write a letter to your PCT Chief Executive.

We have a Campaign Action Sheet you can download and are invited to print and distribute.

Our campaign is now on the Voice Your Views website - it will enable an email to be sent to your MP, outlining our plight and stressing the need for PCTs to be able to use the services of independent midwives. People can easily customise the text to include their own comments.

An update on the latest meeting with the Chief Nursing Officer on 14th Jan 2008, and the recent campaign activities of the IMA, is available here .

PROPOSED MANDATORY PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE (PII) FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS – EFFECT ON INDEPENDENT MIDWIVES:

  • The Independent Midwives Association was founded in 1985 to disseminate information about, and support for, independent midwives, and to lobby for the traditional role of the midwife.
  • Independent Midwives have been unable to obtain insurance on the open market, but are experiencing increasing demand for their services from women who are looking for a greater level of support than the NHS can always offer.
  • Legislation requiring PII must make allowances for those health professionals who cannot obtain insurance on a commercial basis.
  • The Independent Midwives Association is at the forefront of trying to find a solution that meets the Government’s policy requirements while also protecting the ability of its members to practice outside of the NHS.
